Barrhead High School is a £23m educational facility, located in East Renfrewshire. The state-of-the-art school, which was part of the Scottish Futures Trust programme, was delivered by East Renfrewshire Council in partnership with hub West Scotland, the council’s development partner. The main contractor being BAM and architect BDP.
DEMOLISH AND BUILD
The new improved facility was built to replace the demolished old building which had been in use for 46 years. The site was also previously underused due to its water-logged condition. The new build replaced poor quality park land, whilst maintaining a more valued green space – reassuring local campaigners.
The 11,500m2 Secondary School was based on the similar design of Eastwood Secondary School, providing the local community with modern educational and sports facilities. The new Barrhead school provides an inspirational and flexible learning environment for 800 pupils and 100 vocational students.
The project also included car parking, hard and soft landscaping, 3G pitch, games courts, relocation of a skatepark, the provision of new public changing facilities for the sports pitches, incoming services and flood alleviation works.
