Student Castle, Durham

Edward Cade and Jacqui Hawthorn launched Student Castle in 2010 and have since opened schemes in Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Newcastle and York. Each facility is tailored to the city and the students. An additional three sites are under construction in Durham, Oxford and Brighton completing in 2019/20 respectively.


Durham is recognised as one of the UK’s number one landmarks with a skyline dominated by the 11th century Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Over 65,000 people live in Durham and more than 17,000 are university students.
Durham University was established in 1832, and claims to be the third oldest university in England. The university’s buildings are mainly concentrated around the south of the city and Durham Cathedral.



The student accommodation development company, Student Castle invested £50m to build a new home to 440 students in Durham city centre.

The development will comprise of 311 studios and 24 “cluster flats”, retail space, a cinema and a gym.  The complex will be seven stories at the rear and three to the face of Claypath.

Student Castle provide contemporary accommodation which is designed to give students the opportunity to live in a modern and safe facility. The development is located within a 25 minute walk or a 15 minute bus ride of Durham University.

The brand new student accommodation will open September 2019.


CCN were awarded the project to supply 1400no performance door sets in 2018.

The door sets are fire rated to FD60s and finished in Dekodor 3D – Grey.
We also included CESpec range architectural ironmongery SSS.

We are looking forward to seeing the completed development later this year.
